A Research Study of the Coherence of the Qur’an in Allama Ghulam Rasool Saeedi’s Tibyan al-Qur’an: Theoretical Discussions, Principles of Argumentation, and Applied Dimensions
Abstract
Thematic Coherence (Nazm al-Qur’an) is an important subject within the Qur’anic sciences, through which the interrelationship between verses and surahs, the continuity of themes, the context, and the unity of the overall message of the Holy Qur’an can be understood. This study first elucidates the lexical and terminological meanings of continuity (tasalsul), coherence between verses (rabt al-ayat), coherence between surahs (rabt al-suwar), thematic order of verses (nazm al-ayat), and thematic order of surahs (nazm al-suwar), while also examining their interrelationship and distinctions. It then presents an introductory and comparative study of the approaches of classical and modern Qur’anic exegetes concerning the coherence of the Qur’an, particularly Imam al-Razi, Imam al-Biqa‘i, Imam al-Suyuti, Shah Wali Allah al-Dihlawi, Hamid al-Din al-Farahi, and Amin Ahsan Islahi. The primary focus of this research is Tafsir Tibyan al-Qur’an by Allama Ghulam Rasool Saeedi, in which his concept of Qur’anic coherence, his use of context, determination of the relationship between verses, occasions of revelation (Shan al-Nuzul), linguistic and grammatical evidence, Hadith and reports of the Companions and early scholars, and the statements of Qur’anic exegetes have been critically examined. Through the application of his exegetical approach to various verses and surahs, the study demonstrates that, according to Allama Saeedi, the coherence of the Qur’an is not merely a matter of literary correspondence; rather, it is an effective means of understanding the semantic and thematic relationship between verses and the overall objective of a surah. His methodology is characterized by comprehensive, Hadith-oriented, juristic, and contextual features. However, his treatment of Qur’anic coherence generally appears as an applied exegetical principle rather than as a systematically formulated and independent theoretical framework. In this regard, the present study highlights the significance, distinctive features, scholarly strengths, and critical aspects of Qur’anic coherence within the exegetical methodology of Allama Saeedi.
