Discourse coherence and its standards “A theoretical Diachronic study according to modern textual linguistics”

Abstract

The studies of Modern linguistics particular textual grammar and discourse analyses have become a special branch of linguistics which have its own standards, rules, methods that can help the scholars and researchers to analyze a literary, or religious text and understand it correctly. this branch of linguistics facilitate the researchers to deal with a literary text, religious Scripture or any discourse on the bases of stylistics, rhetoric, critics or pragmatics approach. As these studies become a distinct area for research in scientific advancement in the academia, especially in the Arab and Muslim world. Discourse coherence is one of the very simple and basic standard of a discourse/Text analysis that is contributes a lot in building and analyzing a text. It is combination of grammatical devises such as: prosody, repetition, definition, ellipsis, anaphoric and substitution, etc.

       Objectives of this research work to prove explore the basic roots in the studies ancient Arab scholars, and have a look at Western modern linguists. Moreover the research expects to reach this goal through a comparative and analytical study between the concept of cohesion according the Arabs and the modern linguists. However it will highlight the textual work and efforts of the ancient grammarians and scholars, and the paper concludes that the ancient Arab linguists were not only sentence grammarians"نحاة الجملة", in fact they had initiated this kind of studies and their work paid the vital role in the advancement of discourse adherence and its devices in the textual exegeses of the Quran.
