A picture of society in the stories of Youssef Idris and Muhammad Abbas (A Comparative study of selected works)

Abstract

The story is one of the most important literary genres as it is considered a modern art that has its own elements, ingredients and characteristics that distinguish it from other literary arts. It is anecdotal text associated with various social and historical interactions. It has received great attention from writers and critics. The short story presents a single event often accruing with a short period of time and a limited place to show aspect of life to advocate for social reform.        

Yousef Idris and Muhammad Abbas are famous short story writers in Arabic and Urdu Literature respectively and are considered the most innovators in their art.

Their stories depict the aspect of the deprivation, oppression, and poverty of the impoverished, lower classes versus the upper classes that live a luxurious life, and also these stories are an artistic composition that corresponds to a set of values, ideas, attitudes, and situations. Moreover,  their style is realistic and focuses on the issues and problems of the Egyptian and Indian society in the countryside and in the city and advocate to rid man from these problems, and they come with scientific solutions on the level of form and content, as well as their style in these stories is characterized by a tendency to simplicity and intimacy and a tendency to brevity and focus and distinctive expression and away from digression and economy in the description in addition to employing a set of graphic images.

Their stories highlight contradictions and conflicts between different social classes and differences of social values and ideas. Both authors attempt to evoke them and interact with their manifestations and subtleties for a future outlook that seeks to reform their reality.
