Abstract
This study examines the concept of the syllable in Arabic through a comparative analysis of classical and modern linguistic perspectives. It aims to identify similarities and differences in defining and analyzing syllable structure and function. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical comparative methodology and draws upon classical Arabic phonetic research, studies and modern phonological theories. The findings indicate that classical scholars associated the syllable with articulatory interruption and phonetic segmentation, whereas modern linguists conceptualize it as a structured phonological unit consisting of onset, nucleus, and coda, closely linked to stress and intonation. The study also concludes that Arabic syllable structure demonstrates systematic constraints and avoids excessive complexity in phonemic sequencing.
