Abstract

Andalusian literature represents a great legacy of Islamic civilization in our modern era. Among its most significant manifestations are the themes of nostalgia and estrangement. These themes in Andalusian poetry reflect culture and civilization, and embody the experience of the Andalusians, especially after the fall of the cities such as Granada and Córdoba, and the transformation of their social and political conditions.

Andalusian poetry is considered a sincere mirror of a lofty and great civilization. Many Andalusian poets and writers expressed their yearning for the homeland, for family and loved ones, and their sense of loss and alienation in the Eastern or Western Countries. They lament upon the Golden Days of Spain and its long lost Grandure. Their vision revolved around the pain of separation and the glory of the lost past.

The experience of estrangement was deeply rooted in their souls, so they composed poetic verses filled with sadness, grief, longing, and regret. Their poetry was characterized by lamentation and yearning for the homeland. Thus, the motif of estrangement in Andalusian poetry was not merely a transient phenomenon, but rather a profound psychological and intellectual experience with a unified idea and vision.

After the fall of Granada, this nostalgia expressed itself as both a psychological state and a political stance. This emotional state of estrangement and longing was reflected in the creative output of Andalusian poets.

The present study focuses on this poetic motif of nostalgia (ḥanīn) and estrangement (ghurba) and their impact on Andalusian literature. The study adopts a descriptive–analytical methodology, through reading the works of Andalusian poets, extracting poems of nostalgia, analyzing and interpreting them, and finally presenting the key findings and a list of sources and references.
