Shawqi Deif,s Critical Approaches To The Study of Arabic Literature

Abstract

In the literature of any language, literary criticism keeps a very lofty stature. Its mean function is interpretation and comparison of literary work. It has some types i.e. theoretical, practical, impressionistic, effective, perspective or descriptive. Literary criticism provides the poets or pros writer with helping tools for self-evaluation and self-improvement.

In pre Islamic Era, eminent poets were asked to evaluate the art and performance of contesting poets and announce the winners name in annual cultural meeting with emergence of Islam. New horizons of criticism were introduced. With the passage of time a large number of books on said topics were penned in Arabic speaking world. In the modern history of literature Shawqi zief is a seasoned writer, or poet, historian and a well non critic. His books on literary criticism are still considered as reference books in different international universities.
