Abstract

This research is an attempt to highlight the problems during the cultural translation and analytically translate selections from the stories of Mariam Al Saady titled “Mariam and the Good Luck” to demonstrate the best style of translation used. It starts with definitions of translation such as it is the gradual transforming of individuals word, sentences, and meaning from a language to another. Undoubtedly, translation is a science, art, and skill. A good translator is the one who works hard to gain knowledge about the topic of translation. In the beginning, different types of translations are explained including the direct and indirect translation. Moreover, the translator should detach from his original culture to adapt to the culture of the source language. In this way, the translator is torn between the cultures of the source and the target languages.

The summary of “Mariam and the good luck” is then presented. The author, Mariam Al Saady could detach herself and take a broad and critical look at the world to present a new creative and brave work of art. We discussed in detail how culture affects language and the vise versa. It is concluded that the main means of communication between people of a community is the language as it determines their perception of the world and to themselves. In the practical part, we presented a translation for some parts from the stories illustrating the used technique and concluded that literal translation should be avoided to produce a linguistically sound translation.
