Abstract
This research examines the manifestations of divine love (al-Ishq al-Ilahī) and Sufi annihilation (al-fanā’ al-ṣūfī) in the poetry of Asghar Gondvi through a descriptive analytical approach. The study is based on the premise that his poetry transcends emotional expression and constructs a Sufi vision in which divine love becomes a fundamental principle for interpreting existence, while al-fanā’ represents a cognitive and existential state that reshapes the relationship between the self and the Absolute.
The research explores the development of the concepts of al-Ishq and al-fanā’ across multiple dimensions: as a cosmic principle of movement, as intuitive knowledge beyond rationality, as a process of self-effacement, and finally as experiential annihilation in witnessing aesthetic unity. It highlights that the poet’s Sufi experience is grounded in the unity of divine manifestation, where the universe becomes a reflection of divine beauty.
The study concludes that Asghar Gondvi offers a coherent Sufi poetic experience in which poetry functions as a medium of metaphysical and epistemological disclosure rather than mere artistic expression, granting his work a profound philosophical and aesthetic dimension in Urdu literature.
