Abstract
Translation is not a bridge to cross into homogeneous cultures, but rather a means to reach other different cultures and understand their diversity, and the diversity of our Arab cultures as well. We thus know ourselves through our knowledge of others. The path we embark on in knowing it has an immense impact on realizing the self in a deeper way in order to reshape it according to new visions that are not achieved easily without difficulties and problems standing in the way of translators when translating and localizing in various fields of knowledge. There are noticebly several problems and challenges in the field of translation in several specializations. This research addresses some of these difficulties, challenges and problems by discussing four main topics and related sub-issues in two categories: a) theoretically, by addressing the inadequacy of mechanisms for codifying the status of translation and factors of translation efficiency in the Arab world, and b) appliedly, by addressing the reality of literary and scientific translation from where translating poetry and the centrality of reference is possible. These topics were addressed by professors who taught translation and conducted research in Arab and Jordanian universities and institutions for many years at all levels of education. They presented some of these problems, expressed their opinions on them, and proposed solutions to them in a research manner that was open to discussion and give and take process in order to reach useful and acceptable formulas that address these challenges in order to overcome them and move forward in this field. This study addresses these opinions and solutions through a descriptive, analytical and evaluative method. Its recommendations indicate the need for tangible local and Arab efforts to reach a better reality that we aspire to professionally and cognitively, to establish sound and unified foundations for translating literary and scientific terminology, and to set the foundations for the necessary training in a way that expands the work horizons of Arab translators, especially in light of the rapid growth witnessed in language and translation services that embraces many opportunities which qualified linguists can seize.
