Abstract

The abstractionist story, as a modern innovation, appeared at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. It is a new art in terms of form, style, and method of approach. Besides, it is a non-objective story wherein readers feel lost in its warrens; being not committed to certain rules in its writing. It also does not adhere to the logical coherence and chronological sequence of events. It relies on several techniques and special codes. It does not deal with human beings in their physical or tangible forms, either. Rather, it is concerned with depicting the psychological state, the depths of humanity, and the feelings, sensations, worries, and pains that surround it.

Intizar Hussein is considered the pioneer of the abstractionist story. His stories generally tend towards ambiguity and vagueness, and he tends to write internal thoughts and move towards the winged mythical realm of imagination. The story of “ vo Joe khoee he” or “The Missing” expresses is a good example of the abstractionist story, of the “Shahr of Ephesus” anthology. This story reveals the psychological crisis suffered by peoples who are exposed to occupation, wars, and sometimes migration. The story sheds light on the issue of identity dissolution and civilizational and cultural nostalgia.
