Features of Modernity in the Thought of Jawdat Saeed

Abstract

Jawdat Saeed is a contemporary Islamic scholar, being an advocate of education and non-violence he is considered to be a symbol of modernity in Islam. This research focuses on the fact that Islamic belief system based on justice has revolutionized the world and hence it changed the course of history of mankind. The current enlightenment of Europe based on education, especially after the renaissance, has its roots in the Islamic movement propagating “education for all”. Islam praised and dignified the status of education and knowledge. By the passage of time instead of reimagining and creating new horizons of knowledge, Muslim world has been indulged in orthodox ways of thinking and refused to reconstruct the Islamic thought. Jawdat Saeed is one of the contemporary scholars, who understood and realized the main causes of Muslim failure and urged the Muslims to acquire knowledge and act accordingly. He was from Syria and he lived his life with the target to create awareness in the young Muslims with the fundamental understanding of rise and fall of nations. He focused on modern challenges faced by Muslims and its solution and emphasized the importance of reconstruction of religious thought, just like Allama M. Iqbal. His main focus was to encourage Muslims to acquire knowledge and remain peaceful. He believed in peaceful coexistence with others. The aim of this research work is to highlight and analyze the main ideas and works of Jawdat Saeed that provide a deep insight into his lifelong solution for bringing an end to this dark era for Muslims.
