Abstract

Tafcila poetry or metric free verse in Arabic literature is a metric phenomenon, it depends on repeating one foot or one metric unit as a rhythmic base and this provides poets with spaces of musical commitment or innovation. One of the prominent phenomena in Tafcila poetry movement is tadwir, which is the major interest of this research paper, as the paper distinguishes three trends in the practice of tadwir, the first of which is the foot is divided between two lines, and the second is the division of the word between two lines, and the third of which the foot and the word are both divided between two lines or among more.

The paper also discusses the relationship between tadwir and rhyme. It discusses the types of tadwir and suggests terms to indicate them, noting that the Arabic criticism does not pay appropriate attention to tadwir. The paper takes the poetry of the Arab Palestinian poet Mucin Bsaisu as a model.
