Abstract

Christianity is a major religion followed by the majority of people of the world. Its relation and foundation are attributed to the teachings, life, and death of Jesus (PBUH). The Reformed Church is one of the major churches of Protestant, third, most followed sects of Christianity. They consider Jesus as the ‘Son of God’ the second person of the Trinity. The term ‘son of God’ is an ambiguous and incomprehensible term that created dispute among Christians since the early days of Christianity. Some questions were raised about Jesus (PBUH) whether he was an ordinary man, whether a God, or both. Ebionites consider him an ordinary person, while Docetism declares him divine, who appears in human form. Later on, Irenaeus and Tertullian, fathers of the churches, said Jesus (PBUH) has two natures, divine and human. In short, this later explanation about the nature of Jesus (PBUH) created further problems and disputes among the fathers of the churches and led to the councils from (325 CE – 451 CE). The council of Chalcedon (451 CE) finally composed an important confession about the two natures united in one person Jesus Christ and named it the Creed of Chalcedon. So, the epithet “Son of God” is often referred to as Jesus (PBUH). This term has a background in Jewish traditions, which refers to the Messiah or the still awaited Saviour King, who will form the kingdom of David (PBUH) for the children of Israel. The Muslim theologians criticize and counter the Gospels due to philosophical interpretations of the term ‘son of God’ but they can refine their understanding about the term son of God by focusing on the Jewish Scriptures which refuse the Christian belief.
