Abstract

This study explores “The Role of Quality Education in Achieving Sustainable Development from the Perspective of the Qur’anic Prophetic Biography (al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah al-Qur’āniyyah)” by drawing upon the contexts of the Prophet’s ﷺ life as reflected in the Qur’an to gain a deeper understanding of the concept. The methodology adopted is analytical, deriving insights from authentic sources and employing reflection and interpretation to uncover underlying truths. In addition, a comparative approach is used to examine the areas of convergence and divergence between the Qur’anic vision and that of the United Nations. The study is structured into four sections, preceded by an introduction highlighting the significance of the topic. The first section discusses the concept of sustainable development, its goals, and its dimensions. The second explores the Qur’anic perspective on sustainable development through the themes of succession (istikhlāf), development (i‘mār), and the prohibition of corruption and extravagance, while underscoring the essential differences from the UN vision. The third section analyzes the United Nations’ conception of quality education, exposing its Western secular orientation, its link to human rights discourse, and its role in fostering a secular culture aimed at reshaping a “global citizen.” The fourth section presents the Qur’anic Prophetic vision of quality education, affirming that knowledge is the pathway to progress and development, that the first teacher of humanity is Allah Himself, that its message is timeless, guided by revelation, and that encompasses the entire universe as its field of exploration. The study concludes with a synthesis of findings, alongside recommendations and suggestions for further research. The study found that the UN vision of sustainable development is driven by material concerns, particularly the fear of resource depletion. By contrast, the Qur’anic perspective transcends such anxieties, affirming that sustenance is guaranteed by divine promise— a fact that is also scientifically proven. Scarcity, it argues, is not caused by population growth but by extravagance, mismanagement, and unjust distribution. Resources are understood not as absolute possessions but as a trust, with humanity serving as God’s vicegerent (istikhlāf), responsible for their just and wise administration. The research further concludes that the UN employs “quality education” as a tool to promote a secular identity that erodes religious and cultural particularities. Conversely, the Qur’an outlines a divinely inspired model of education inseparable from revelation, whose ultimate goal is servitude to God and the just cultivation of the earth. Qur’anic education extends across the entire span of human existence, from cradle to resurrection, addressing fundamental existential questions and encompassing all beneficial knowledge that does not contradict revelation. In this way, it integrates material progress with moral and spiritual values.
